Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez reports that the Honorable Judge Mitchell Pascual sentenced Justin Goris to 15 years in New Jersey State Prison for the February, 2022 death of 15-year old, Jersey City resident Devin Bryant. The sentencing was pronounced on Monday, November 4, 2024.
The 20-year old Goris, a Queens, New York resident, pleaded guilty to aggravated manslaughter on July 31, 2024. His sentence is subject to the No Early Release Act. He will not be eligible for parole until 85 percent of his sentence has been served.
Goris, who was 17-years-old at the time of the fatal shooting, had initially been charged as a juvenile before being waived to the Criminal Division.
According to Prosecutor Suarez, members of the Jersey City Police Department responded to the area of 112 Myrtle Avenue on February 12, 2022 on a report that shots had been fired. When police arrived they found a male victim outside that location with an apparent gunshot wound. The injured male, who later was identified as Bryant, was transported by Emergency Medical Services to the Jersey City Medical Center. He was pronounced dead at approximately 9:10 p.m.
Suarez says the Northern Regional Medical Examiner’s Office determined the cause of death to be a gunshot wound to the abdomen and the manner of death to be homicide.
