West New York’s current library, located on 60th Street across from Town Hall, is over 100 years old. By the end of 2026, the Town will have a new public library to replace it.
On Thursday afternoon, Mayor Albio Sires, the Board of Commissioners and members of the local Library Board of Trustees held a ceremonial groundbreaking inside the new location, the former Modell’s Sporting Good store located on Bergenline Avenue at the corner of 57th Street.
The two story building will house a state of the art library, featuring more space than the current location. It will be handicapped accessible and have parking in the rear.
The estimated cost for the demolition is $1.1-million, with approximately $7-$8-million for the renovation work. The state is contributing some $6-million toward the project.
Once the new library is completed later this year, the plan is for the Police Department to move into the current location site.
