The Secaucus Board of Education and the State Health Department have confirmed that a student at Secaucus High School tested positive last week for active tuberculosis.
A letter was sent to parents informing them of the situation. Tuberculosis is a contagious illness that starts in the lungs and is caused by a bacteria. Health officials say it is not spread through casual contact.
Vaccines are effective against the illness.
The transmission of tuberculosis usually requires a prolonged, close, indoor exposure to someone with the active disease.
Secaucus health officials are continuing to monitor individuals with follow up testing if they came in contact with the student.
