United States Senator Bob Menendez was successfully elected to his second term on Tuesday, defeating Republican State Senator Joe Kyrillos by a landslide: roughly 1.2 million votes (59%) to 800,000 (40%).
Menendez, a former Mayor of Union City from 1986 until 1992, has earned another six-year term on the strength of a campaign promoting clean energy, tax relief, creating jobs, protecting consumers and preserving Medicare and Social Security.
Despite the support of Gov. Chris Christie, a long-time friend, Kyrillos seemed to lose steam as the race grew closer to Election Day and was fighting an uphill battle to begin with. Menendez simply had far greater name recognition among voters and had outraised his opponent by a ratio of roughly three to one.
