Union City raised the Cuban flag at International Plaza on Monday, as the municipality commemorated the island’s independence, while presenting proclamations to two local teachers as Cuban Americans of the Year.

The honorees were Sara M. Gilmore Academy teachers Alejandro Mena, a science teacher and coach, and Ana Zalacain, an art teacher.

Approximately 25 Cuban Americans, some former political prisoners, attended the flag raising ceremony which commemorated Cuba’s 1902 independence from Spain.

The teachers honored have contributed to the education of the city’s youngsters.  They are well respected and beloved by the Gilmore community.

Commissioner Celin Valdivia said he will not return to his homeland until the Communist dictatorship has been removed and the island’s inhabitants are free.  That certainly is the hope of many of Union City’s transplanted residents.
