Union City’s newest public school, the Esther Salas Academy, houses grades 7 through 9 on 36th Street with a capacity approaching 700 students. The $80-million building was paid for using state, School Development Authority money.
The new school eases the crowding in the city’s two middle schools, Union Hill and Emerson, as well as in the elementary schools, particularly Robert Waters.

Named for federal Judge Esther Salas, a graduate of Union City’s public school system, the multi-story building currently has an enrollment of more than 500 students. It is a state-of-the-art, technology focused school with special features, such as science labs, hydroponics labs, computer classrooms, a dance studio, much rooms and so much more.

The cafeteria and gymnasium are top notch. There are floors dedicated to each grade level. Special lockers are focused for students with disabilities, and there are teacher workrooms.
The public parking garage across the street has dedicated spaces for teaching and school staff.
The Board of Education held a special, grand opening ceremony at the school on Monday.
