Union City Celebrates 100 Years With A Parade

After nine months of events celebrating Union City’s 100th anniversary as a municipality, the city topped it all off with a gala, Centennial Parade down Bergenline Avenue on Sunday afternoon, from 48th Street to 2nd Street.

              Incorporated on June 1, 1925 when Union Hill and West Hoboken merged, Union City is a true melting pot, home to many different Hispanic nationalities after its initial influence was that of German immigrants.

              As of the 2020 United States census, Union City is New Jersey’s 18th most-populous municipality, with a population totaling more than 68,600 residents.  The city is estimated to be the country’s 590th most-populous municipality overall.  It covers 1.29 square miles.

Union City goes by two common nicknames; The Embroidery Capital of the United States and Havana on the Hudson, reflecting the fact that aside from Miami, it has the highest number of Cubans outside of Havana, Cuba.
