The Union City community gathered on May 20th to celebrate Cuban Independence day. The day began with a flag raising ceremony in which the Cuban Man and Woman of the year were honored. Both honorees became emotional when speaking about the struggle of Cuba and the generations who came before them. The Celebrations continued in Jose Marti Freshman Academy later that night.

Many Cuban Americans felt that celebrating Cuban Independence was bittersweet, with many Cuban families continuing to live under the laws of the Castro dictatorship. Some people even criticized the United States recent involvement in Cuba, including Mayor and Senator Brian P. Stack. Even still Union City gathered to celebrate Cuba’s heritage and culture, and the dream that one day Cuba will truly be free.
