On Friday, November 28th, Union City Police officers responded to a 10 p.m. call for help in the township when the victim said her boyfriend, Brian Valdes, 21, had allegedly assaulted her.
The woman says he became upset when she came home late, put her in a chokehold and hit her in the face.
Due to the visible signs of injuries, Valdes was arrested and charged with Domestic Violence Simple Assault.
According to court officials, the Union City man has a criminal history, including three prior incidents involving harassment and assault.
His bail was set at $2,500 with no 10-percent option.
The girlfriend was granted temporary custody of their child and Valdes will be served with a temporary restraining order.
Also in Union City on Sunday, November 30th, Damien Soto was charged with Domestic Violence Assault.
According to the police report, the 33-year-old became irate over an argument over money and struck his grandmother with a closed fist on her left arm, causing a minor scratch and bruise.
The Union City man also pushed his mother — almost causing her to fall down the hallway stairs.
Soto has been diagnosed with bipolar disorder and prescribed numerous medications. He has a criminal history for Simple Assault and Criminal Mischief out of Jersey City.
Soto’s bail was set at $2,500.
