For the second consecutive year, the Union City Board of Education sponsored an Autism Awareness Fair, giving the community insight into the spectrum which affects so many individuals within the city.

The event was held Saturday at the Jose Marti STEM Academy.  Numerous health care providers, including North Hudson Community Action Corporation, were on hand to provide information on autism, which has been on the rise within the city according to officials.

There were various sensory activities for individuals to participate in, including bouncy houses, basketball and karate, as well as quiet areas so those on the spectrum were not overwhelmed.  The event was held in conjunction with the Union City Board of Commissioners.

Hot dogs were available for the community to enjoy, and Congressman Rob Menendez had representatives on hand to answer questions and assist residents with issues of concern they might have had.

April is Autism Awareness Month.  Take the time to learn about it.  You’ll find that people on the spectrum are really no different than you or I.
