Jersey City firefighters responded to a two-alarm fire and explosion at a bodega on Ocean Avenue near Claremont Avenue just before 10:30 p.m. Thursday night.
One occupant of the bodega, a 38-year-old Trenton man and relative of the store owner, was injured when wood pierced his body near his arm. He was transported to the Jersey City Medical Center-Barnabas Health for treatment of his injuries.
When firefighters arrived on the scene, they found heavy smoke coming from the store, which had it’s gate and windows blown out. The tenant of the one apartment above the store was not home at the time of the incident.
While battling the fire and smoke, a secondary explosion occurred but no firefighters were injured. The cause of the fire and explosion remain under investigation.
