A video gone viral shows dead bodies being loaded into a refrigerated truck parked outside of the Brooklyn Hospital Center in Fort Greene, a disturbing reminder of just how severe the COVID-19 pandemic is, particularly in New York City.
With the most coronavirus cases in the United States, New York City hospitals are being overrun with patients. The video, which runs more than five minutes in length and was posted on You Tube, brings to light the stark reality our nation is facing. More beds, more personal protective equipment (PPE’s), more ventilators, and yes, more morgues are in demand.
At one point in the video you can hear the man filming what he is witnessing say, “This is for real. This is Brooklyn. They putting the bodies in the 18-wheeler…this is no joke…this is Brooklyn Hospital.”
Another video shows a similar site outside of Maimonides Medical Center, located in Borough Park, Brooklyn.
The New York Post first reported the incident and posted the video, the authenticity of which was confirmed by hospital spokeswoman Eileen Tynion who stated, “We regret that someone was able to obtain that footage and plan to communicate more thoughtfully with the community in the future.”
Other makeshift morgues have been set up outside numerous hospitals in New York City.
This morning, Mayor Bill de Blasio said on NBC’s Today program, that every hospital bed in the city, 20,000 in total, may have to be converted into intensive care beds to treat COVID-19 patients.
As of last night, 20-percent of New York City’s 38.087 coronavirus cases were hospitalized. Of that total, 7,741 patients, 1,700 were in ICU. More than 900 have died from the virus.
