Huge news on Saturday at County Prep High School in Jersey City, as Hudson County Vision Zero Task Force Chairman and County Executive Craig Guy announced Hudson County’s Vision Zero Action Plan.
Saturday’s announcement included the launch of the Vision Zero Target Year of 2034 to eliminate fatalities and injuries on Hudson County roads. The County Executive was joined by Congressman Rob Menendez (D – District 8), Board of County Commissioners Chairman Anthony Romano, Commissioner Bill O’Dea, the advocacy organization Hudson County Complete Streets, and many community members.
During the press conference, Congressman Menendez added, “The Vision Zero Action Plan is a comprehensive approach to keeping our residents safe throughout Hudson County. I was proud to secure funding to create and finalize this plan through the Safer Streets and Roads for All grant program and have worked closely with our partners in the county government to prioritize funding for specific projects that will achieve this vision, including safety improvements on Passaic Avenue. As the most densely populated county in the state, it is critical that we continue this work to further ensure the safety and security for everyone who lives in and visits our community.”
“As elected officials, we are proud to be responsive to the needs of the communities we represent and Vision Zero is an incredibly critical part of staying committed to that. It is our goal to secure the safety of all road users and continue to work together to accomplish the Target Year of 2034,” said Hudson County Commission Chairman Romano.
The Vision Zero Action Plan includes the following:
- Extensive Public Outreach – online surveys with over 1,700 responses, 11 pop-up events, 4 public meetings, and 5 focus group meetings;
- Investment in High Injury Network Corridors – this is overlap of the highest amount of crashes in the most disadvantaged communities. This network is where investment is most critical;
- Working with Municipalities – Providing continued technical assistance to the towns and cities of Hudson County;
- Concept Designs – Created 2 concept designs to submit to the SS4A program for the next round of implementation funding;
- A toolkit for road design changes;
- Creating an Action Plan for the next 5 years to get us to our Target Year
The Vision Zero Task Force was established in August 2023 and the team has been meeting monthly as a collaborative effort between all stakeholders in Hudson County. For more information about Vision Zero, click here.
