Weehawken Mayor Richard Turner, in the township’s latest COVID-19 update issued at 7 p.m. on Friday night, warned residents they must continue to abide by Governor Phil Murphy’s ban on gatherings of 10 people or more, both in public places or at home.  The Mayor made the warning after the township received several reports of birthday parties and neighborhood gatherings taking place.

Mayor Turner stated, “These events must stop now!  They are against the Governor’s Executive Order, which we are required by law to enforce.”

The Mayor reminds residents that birthday parties or other types of gatherings can be held virtually.  He added, “Remember, children also can catch this disease; children and adults mixing together at events can be a dangerous combination. The nicer weather is coming and as difficult as it may be, we all must show the proper restraints.”

Turner says Weehawken Police do not want to begin issuing summonses to violators, but they will do so if people do not abide by the law.  Fines can be as high as $1,000. “There may even be a legal liability on the host of the event.”

Mayor Turner reminds residents that Weehawken’s curfew remains in place between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m.

To date, Weehawken has had 272 positive COVID-19 cases, with 71 still being active.  183 Weehawken residents have recovered from the virus.  Unfortunately, as of Friday night, 18 township residents have passed away due to complications of the coronavirus.

Weehawken has a hotline in place for any residents who have an issue or problem.  That telephone number is (201) 773-7620.  You can also call the Township Manager’s Office at (201) 319-6005 or send a Direct Message on Facebook or Twitter.
