After winning a third straight Hudson County championship, Weehawken High School’s softball squad fell short of its goal of winning a state, sectional championship.
The Indians lost on Friday afternoon in the NJSIAA Group 1, Section 2 title game at Cedar Grove, in a five inning, mercy shortened game, 11-0 to the top seeded Panthers.
Three runs in the third, another three in the fourth as rain began to fall, and a total meltdown in the fifth ended the Indians’ season. But it was a season to remember, as Weehawken’s softball program has become one of the best in northern New Jersey under the leadership of head coach Raquel Roder and assistant coach Nicole Fleck.
The squad has made its school and the township proud, something that was quite evident by the number of Weehawken residents who attended the road game, including Mayor Richard Turner and Township Manager Gio Ahmad.
