West New York held its annual National Night Out event on August 13 after last week’s storms forced the town to reschedule.

The event drew very large crowds, with attendees getting the chance to meet with police, fire and other emergency services responders. There were also a lot of activities for the children and free food and treats.

In addition, officials used the venue to unveil photos of the new recreation center, which will be located adjacent to historic Miller Stadium and Miller Park. Hudson TV caught up with West New York Mayor Albio Sires, who talked about some of the center’s new features.

West New York Mayor Albio Sires – “It’s going to have an Olympic-sized pool with seven lanes, basketball courts, soccer field inside, pickleball, exercise room where they can do Pilates and other things. It’s about $35 million. It’s a private-public partnership, where people are going to build buildings behind us and people are going to build buildings on 67th Street and then they purchased the air rights for the parking lots. It’s not going to come out of the taxpayers. This is all funded by different pots of money.”

While the photos were unveiled, the plan is still in its infancy. In addition to the recreation center, the proposal includes the construction of two new parking garages that will replace the existing surface lots at 58th Street & Madison Street and 66th Street & Park Avenue. The new garages will provide 400 additional public parking spaces, with dedicated parking for new residential developments in these areas.
