The Town of West New York has taken steps to improve the environment. It has announced a major sustainability investment by adding a new fleet of electric vehicles, backed by more than $4 million in funding from the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection’s Volkswagen Mitigation Trust Fund (Phase 2). Mayor Albio Sires stated, “This initiative is part of our ongoing efforts to reduce environmental impact, modernize municipal services, and enhance the quality of life for our residents.” The new vehicles added to the municipal fleet include:
- 2 electric Mack garbage trucks (2025 model, 29-yard capacity)
- 2 electric Ford E-Transit 350 buses for senior transportation
In addition, the project includes charging infrastructure consisting of:
- 2 DC fast-charging stations for trucks
- 4 AC charging stations dedicated exclusively to the buses
According to state data, the transportation sector accounts for 38% of greenhouse gas emissions in New Jersey. With this project, West New York aims to significantly reduce emissions, lower noise pollution, and decrease long-term operational costs. Mayor Sires reaffirmed his commitment to building a cleaner, more efficient, and sustainable future for the entire community.
