West New York children got to know their town’s police officers on Friday during the second annual, Ice Cream With A Cop event in Donnolly Park.
The two police unions came up with the idea last year as a way to engage with the town’s young children; letting them know that the police are your friend and can be trusted. Each child received a free ice cream cone. And they got to meet and greet with the officers.
According to Mayor Albio Sires and Public Safety Director Henry Codina, it’s all part of community relations.
Later this summer, the West New York Police Department will hold a junior police academy for the older kids, teaching them what’s involved with being a police officer.
