WNY Police Arrest Two Following Investigation Leading To Seizure Of Handguns

Officers from the West New York Police Department have arrested two people following an investigation that led to the discovery of two handguns plus other weapons.

In a press release this morning, the Department stated that on May 28, 2025, Detectives Chris Ortiz and Rich Dominguez were on patrol when they observed a black, 4-door Acura commit several traffic violations.  The Detectives stopped the vehicle in the area of 60th and Madison Streets.  The press release stated, “As they approached the vehicle, they observed five occupants in the vehicle dressed in all black with hoods and black face coverings. During the stop, backup Officer Frank Escobar observed one of the passengers concealing a hunting knife. Detective Dominguez then observed in plain view loose bullets in the backseat. Upon further investigation, the Detectives recovered two handguns and the hunting knife.”

20-year old Juan J. Rodriguez of Union City has been charged with:
• Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose
• Unlawful Possession of a Weapon
• Possession of a Defaced Firearm
• Possession of Hollow Point Ammunition

                                                                      19-year old Isaiah G. Alvarez of Jersey City is charged with:
• Unlawful Possession of a Weapon
• Possession of Prohibited Weapons

West New York Police Director Henry Codina stated, “The safety of our community is our top priority, and the actions of our officers in this case reflect the professionalism, vigilance, and dedication that the residents of West New York can count on every day.  The recovery of these illegal firearms and weapons is a direct result of proactive police work and strong teamwork. I commend the involved officers for their swift actions that undoubtedly prevented a potentially dangerous situation. We will continue to work tirelessly to keep illegal weapons off our streets and ensure the safety and well-being of our residents.”

The two suspects are currently being held at the Hudson County Correctional Facility in Kearny pending their appearance in court.  The driver of the vehicle was issued motor vehicle summonses and released at the scene following a check for warrants. The other occupants were also released at the scene.

The above charges are merely accusations, and the defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty
