The Bayonne City Clerk’s Office has clarified the number of nominating petition signatures needed for first, second and third ward council candidates in the upcoming May 12, 2026 municipal election.  Last week it was reported that 25 valid signatures of registered voters in each ward were required to have a candidate’s name placed on the ballot.
Bayonne’s Law Department then confirmed former Governor Phil Murphy’s legislation       A-5117/S-3994 sets the number of required petition signatures based on the 2020 Census.  That total is 50 signatures for each ward based on population figures per ward.
According to the 2020 Census, candidates for mayor and council at large must obtain a total of 100 valid nominating petition signatures.
Petitions are available in the City Clerk’s Office during normal business hours.
The filing deadline is Thursday, February 26th at 4 pm.
