More than 700 volunteers spent Saturday packing turkeys for delivery to needy families throughout Union City and the 33rd Legislative District.
It was all part of a decades’ old tradition by the Brian P. Stack Civic Association. In all, some 30,000 free turkeys are being delivered to families over the next 10 day period in time for Thanksgiving.
This effort began years ago when Brian Stack was a teenager, collecting and giving away chickens for the holiday season. It has become a massive, assembly line-like, community effort staged out of the Union City Police/DPW Garage on Kerrigan Avenue.
Saturday’s cold temperature did not dampen the spirits of the hundreds of volunteers who took pride in what they were doing. With the recent government shutdown, and the stoppage of SNAP benefits, this huge undertaking was needed more than ever this year, as so many people are struggling to make ends meet and provide for their families.
The turkeys came from Jaindl Farms in Pennsylvania.
Hudson County Executive Craig Guy was on hand and told Hudson TV that the County will continue to give out food to those in need over the coming days, as it did last week in Kearny. The giveaways will occur in Jersey City, Bayonne and North Hudson.
