At 6:45 Wednesday morning, at the intersection of Anderson and Fairview Avenues in Fairview, 57-year old Teresa Maresca of Guttenberg was struck by the left, rear tire of a New Jersey Transit bus and killed.
NJ Transit spokesperson Jim Smith told Hudson TV during a phone interview, that the Fairview Police Department is leading the investigation with assistance from NJ Transit Police. Fairview Police Chief Martin Kahn told Hudson TV that Maresca was an employee at the Food Bazaar Supermarket in Fairview. The Chief said she was not in the crosswalk when struck by the bus.
Smith confirmed that the bus, the #166 route out of the Port Authority Bus Terminal in Manhattan to Cresskill, was making a left turn from Anderson onto Fairview when the woman was fatally struck and dragged under the rear of the vehicle before it came to a stop.
None of the 38 passengers on the bus, nor the 73-year old driver, were injured. The Bergen County Medical Examiner pronounced the woman dead at the scene. The Bergen County Sheriff’s Office Bureau of Criminal Identification, as well as the Fairview Fire Department, were also on the scene.
No criminal charges have been filed at this time.

Sign in to commentShe was a wonderful lady, so good-hearted. I know things like this are always said after someone dies, but she was a hardworking, dear woman. Unfortunately the intersection where she was killed, it’s simply not safe for pedestrians. I really hope the town of Fairview cares enough to change the traffic lights there or something to make crossing there safer for pedestrians.
Also her name is Teresa Maresca. Worker at Food Bazaar Supermarket in Fairview.
NOTE: "None of the 38 passengers on the bus, nor the driver, were injured." Not too much criticism toward the writer but, a tiny woman was smashed by a 40,000 pound bus-- goes without saying. We know they're physically fine. Their trauma though is going to be everlasting.
This is terribly sad. As the investigation develops (worth keeping an eye on this story), we should be interested in knowing the "cause" in this accident because if you saw the scene, it was gory and incredibly saddening. Traffic (car) related deaths here are out of control.
