Last week, the Board Board of Education agreed with Superintendent of Schools John Niesz that the position of Assistant Superintendent of Schools for Special Education was needed to help oversee the 1,500 special needs students currently in the district.  The news was first reported by TAPinto Bayonne.

The new Assistant’s position will be paired with the Superintendent for Curriculum and the Assistant Superintendent for Personnel to place the needs of Special Education students on an equal footing with those departments.  The Assistant Superintendent for Special Education position currently exists in several other school districts throughout New Jersey.

At the present time, Bayonne’s school district has approximately 15 percent of its student population classified as special needs.  Superintendent Niesz says as the number of students in the district grows, the percentage of special needs students will as well.
