Hoboken Police Charge NY Man With 6 Counts of Aggravated Assault & Weapon's Possession

According to Hoboken Detective Sergeant Jonathan Mecka, 37-year old New York resident Leonardo Clanton was arrested on Thursday, December 9 at approximately 10:45 am and charged with 6 counts of aggravated assault, weapons possession and resisting arrest.

Mecka says the Hoboken Police Department responded to the area of 11th and Jefferson Streets on a report of a male striking people with a crutch.  As officers responded, police dispatch received additional calls advising the department that the male had stuck multiple people with the crutch.  Officers Wilfredo Gomez and Roberto Cuevas were first to arrive on the scene.   They attempted to stop the individual, however, he refused to comply with their orders.  At this time, Sgt. Joe Lucignano and Officer Dylan Archilla arrived on scene.

The male, who was identified as Clanton, continued to take batting stances with the crutch while yelling at the officers to shoot him.  Mecka says the officers were able to safely arrest Clanton without incident.  During the on-scene investigation officers determined that  Clanton had assaulted a total of 6 people, one of which he knew. Some of the victims were transported to a local hospital for their injuries while others refused medical attention.

Based on his actions Clanton was charged with the following:  6 counts of Aggravated Assault, 1 count Resisting Arrest, 1 count Unlawful possession of a weapon, 1 count Possession of a weapon for Unlawful purposes. Additionally, while at police headquarters Clanton refused to allow officers to fingerprint him and he was charged for that as well.

Clanton was processed then transported to the Hudson County Correctional Facility in Kearny.
