*This story contains new information A two-alarm fire broke out overnight at 27 West 1st Street near Kelly Parkway in Bayonne.

According to Bayonne Fire Chief Keith Weaver, the cause of the fire, which broke out at 1:26 am, remains under investigation this afternoon, but it does not appear to be suspicious in nature.

When companies arrived on the scene, they found heavy fire conditions inside a store on the first floor of the four story apartment building. Chief Weaver stated, “Firefighters used multiple hand lines to extinguish the blaze, which was placed under control at 2:14am. One firefighter was injured and taken to a local hospital by McCabe Ambulance. He was treated and released. No other injuries were reported.”

All of the occupants in the building, as well the occupants of 5-7 Kelly Parkway, were temporarily evacuated during the fire department’s operations. One occupant of the building has been temporarily displaced from their apartment according to the Chief and is under the care of the Bayonne Office of Emergency Management and the Red Cross.

Chief Weaver added, “Once again, I want thank our firefighters for their excellent work which kept this fire from spreading within the multi-unit apartment building. I also want to thank the Bayonne Police Department for assisting with the evacuation of all the occupants of the building’s apartments and McCabe Ambulance for their assistance at the fire scene.”
