Following several years off due to COVID, Weehawken’s recreation Babe Ruth baseball program is back and looking to expand. The first of two tryout sessions was held at Weehawken Stadium on Saturday night.
With spring training and the World Baseball Classic drawing to a close, about 16 Weehawken teenagers aged 13 to 15, braved brisk temperatures on Saturday night, looking to make a squad, as games begin next month.
Unlike many neighboring municipalities, the Babe Ruth Recreation Program is free for township youngsters, as is the travel team program. Weehawken will play games against West New York, Union City and Hoboken through mid-July.
Approximately 40 teenagers are expected to participate in the Babe Ruth program, which serves as a feeder program for the high school’s baseball team.
A second try-out for the Babe Ruth Program will be held on Saturday, March 25th beginning at 3 pm in the high school gymnasium. Weather permitting, the try-out may move to Weehawken Stadium, as Saturday’s try-outs did.
