Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez announced this morning that two men from Jersey City have been charged with fraud after providing false information in an auto insurance claim in order to receive compensation for medical treatment.

Suarez stated, “36-year old Shelton Sutton and 36-year old Kevin London are each charged with one count of Insurance Fraud in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:21-4.6a, a crime of the third degree. Sutton is additionally charged with one count of Conspiracy to Commit Insurance Fraud in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:5-2a(1) and 2C:21-4.6a, a crime of the third degree.”

Sutton was arrested at the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office in Jersey City two days ago, on Monday, April 3 while London was arrested on Thursday, February 2, 2023. The investigation revealed Sutton was involved in a motor vehicle collision in Jersey City on March 20, 2022, while driving a Mercedes Benz owned by London. Sutton identified himself as London to law enforcement during the initial collision investigation.

According to Suarez, London and Sutton both later sought medical treatment through a claim with Progressive Insurance. In their claims, London identified himself as the driver and Sutton reported being a passenger. Investigators later determined Sutton was the operator and sole occupant of the vehicle at the time of the collision.

Prosecutor Suarez credited the Insurance Fraud Unit with the investigation and arrest. The above charges are merely accusations and the defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
