As Hurricane Idalia Pounded Florida, WNY EMS Ready To Assist

As Hurricane Idalia raced across Florida and into Georgia, leaving a path of destruction in its wake, the southeastern region of the United States begins to access the damage Mother Nature has left on the ground.

The Hurricane reached Category 4, with winds as high as 130 MPH as it sped toward the Florida panhandle.  Buildings destroyed, downed trees and massive flooding.  Idalia was downgraded to Category 1 by 12 pm on Wednesday.

In West New York, the Emergency Medical Services unit was on standby, waiting to see whether its assistance would be needed in rescue efforts.  As of mid-day Wednesday, the WNY EMS had not received notification that their help was needed.

It word does come, one member of the unit, along with one vehicle, would be heading to Florida on a moment’s notice.  It would be the first time the unit was deployed to another part of the country.  It has assisted on numerous disaster calls throughout New Jersey.

For now, they stand ready if that call comes.
