NJ First Lady Tammy Murphy To Seek Menendez's U.S. Senate Seat

In a video announcement this morning, New Jersey First Lady Tammy Murphy announced she will seek the United States Senate seat currently held by indicted-Senator Robert Menendez.

The 58-year old wife of New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy, says in the video she has a platform “to help moms who aren’t nearly as fortunate as I am.”

In the video, Murphy shares her story from childhood to becoming a mother of four children.  Murphy alluded to the struggles many mothers have saying, “When I was pregnant, and even after [my children] were born, I worried about a million things, like all moms do.  But I never worried if I’d survive childbirth, or if my babies would get the care they needed.  I didn’t have to. The money in our family’s bank account, and frankly, the color of my skin meant I could get the best care available. But that’s not the case for a lot of women.”

Murphy says woman and babies are dying at a rate higher than most other states, and it’s almost “exclusively in our Black and Brown communities.”

In the video, Murphy goes on to say, “We have big, complicated issues, and solving them won’t be easy.  I’m running for United States Senate because we owe it to our kids to do better.”
