A little past 9 o’clock this morning, the National Weather Service issued the following statement with regard to today’s heavy snowfall:

“Over the next two to three hours we’re anticipating the potential for rapid snow accumulation in the areas that have already transitioned to pure snow.  If you can delay travel please do. 1-2 inch an hour rates are possible.”

That’s exactly what we are seeing in northeastern New Jersey, with Hudson County getting pounded by snow.  The County remains under a winter storm warning through 6 pm as of 9 am, with totals expected to be in the six to eight inch range.

The heavy snow load could bring down tree branches onto power lines, making power outages possible. Please report power outages and downed wires to PSEG at https://nj.myaccount.pseg.com/myservicepublic/outagepublic.

The  Hudson County Office of Emergency Management warns that dangerous driving conditions could impact the evening commute and encourages residents to avoid or limit travel whenever possible.

In Hoboken, snow emergency routes are in effect and being enforced. Vehicles parked on snow emergency routes, when the streets are snow covered, are subject to ticketing and towing. This is necessary to allow emergency vehicles to move throughout Hoboken for the safety and welfare of all residents.

Snow emergency routes will remain in place until after the snowfall ceases, and the streets are plowed sufficiently and to the extent that parking will not interfere with the normal flow of traffic.

Emergency snow routes in Hoboken are labeled with street signs that read “No Parking When Road Is Snow Covered.” A map of emergency snow routes is available on the City website: www.hobokennj.gov/snow .

Minor to moderate coastal flooding is in the forecast. Road closures, seas up to 9 feet high and property inundation aren’t off the table, the National Weather Service said.

Also in Hoboken, the HOP shuttles will continue to run regular routes starting at 12 p.m. as long as conditions safely allow.

All municipal garages in Hoboken are at capacity for the residential discounted rate and remain open for monthly members only. Discounted parking will end at 7 p.m. tonight. Regular rates apply at other times.

West New York and Hoboken have announced that all recreational programs are cancelled for today.
