Union City raised the Colombian flag at International Plaza on Friday afternoon, as the South American country celebrates 225 years of independence from Spain.
The ceremony was well attended.
The Union City Board of Commissioners presented two proclamations to local, Colombian Americans. Poet Gilma Camargo Aguirre and recently retired North Hudson firefighter,
Jose Gutierrez, an EMT and Colombian American of the Year, were proud to receive their

recognition.
On Saturday, July 20th, Union City will continue the celebration, holding a Colombian festival between noon and 6 pm. The festivities will take place on 48th Street, between Bergenline and New York Avenues.
The free event will feature rides and entertainment.
