UNION CITY, NJ – In the wake of recent school shootings at Apalachee High School in Winder, Georgia, Union City Mayor Brian P. Stack has taken decisive action to ensure the safety of students while respecting constitutional rights. His approach focuses on immediate security enhancements within schools rather than entering the broader debate on gun control.

Mayor Stack, now the longest-serving mayor in Union City’s history, has announced an increase in police presence across all city schools. High schools will now see four officers, middle schools two, and even elementary schools will have one officer assigned. This strategy serves a dual purpose: to act as a deterrent against potential threats and to serve as mentors to students, addressing issues like bullying, threats at home, and domestic violence.

Further bolstering security, Union City schools have been equipped with metal detectors and bullet resistant glass at entrances, a move supported by a grant aimed at enhancing school safety. These measures represent Mayor Stack’s commitment to creating a secure learning environment without infringing on the rights of law-abiding gun owners.

Mayor Stack’s policies underscore his administration’s focus on actionable solutions over legislative debates. “Our priority is the safety of our children. By increasing security presence and installing intelligent equipment, we’re taking direct action to prevent tragedies,” Stack stated. His approach avoids the contentious issue of gun rights, focusing instead on what can be controlled locally: the security within school premises.

This initiative comes at a time when school shootings have become a distressing regularity, with 22 incidents reported this year alone that resulted in injuries or deaths. Mayor Stack’s proactive measures might set a precedent for how municipalities can address school safety, emphasizing immediate security enhancements while navigating the complex landscape of Second Amendment rights.
