Union City Celebrates 203rd Anniversary of Costa Rican Independence

The 203rd anniversary of Costa Rican independence was celebrated in Union City on Monday afternoon, as three residents were honored and the flag of the Central American nation was raised.
                    The Costa Rican Consul was in attendance, as Union City Commissioners celebrated the accomplishments of three, native Costa Ricans, presenting City proclamations to former Costa Rican national soccer team player Yirlania Fonseca and TV newscaster Elias Alvarado.
A New Jersey Senate Citation from State Senator Brian Stack was presented to Hudson County Social Services Department employee Milixa Jimenez.
Costa Rica gained independence from Spain on September 15, 1821.  Also this week, Union City will hold independence ceremonies for the Central American countries of El Salvador and Honduras.
