A major water main replacement project has been announced by the City of Hoboken, as more than 3,700 feet of water mains will be replaced this year. Today’s announcement targets the Hudson Place area.
The Hudson Place Water Main Replacement Project will upgrade over 850 linear feet of water mains in the Hudson Place area. The project is part of the City’s ongoing commitment to modernize Hoboken’s drinking water infrastructure to improve service reliability and reduce the need for emergency repairs.
In a statement Mayor Ravi Bhalla said, “This project represents another major step forward in our long-term commitment to building a resilient, reliable water system for Hoboken residents. By modernizing aging infrastructure and making smart investments, we are reducing emergency repairs, improving water quality, and delivering better service to our community.”
The work will begin this Monday, May 19, as the City’s contractor will replace outdated 8-inch and 6-inch water mains with new, larger 12-inch water mains. They will install new service lines to the curb and replace the hydrants along Hudson Place between River Street and Warrington Plaza and replace water services on River Street between Hudson Place and Newark Street.
The construction project will force the closure of neighborhood streets. Hudson Place, east of River Street, will be closed to vehicular traffic starting on Monday, May 19, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Temporary No Parking signs have been posted. The taxi stand has been temporarily relocated to the south side of Newark Street between Hudson Street and River Street.
More road closures will occur on Wednesday, May 21, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., including Newark Street from River Street to Sinatra Drive, and Sinatra Drive from Newark Street to First Street for test pitting.
According to a press release from City Hall, “The Hudson Place Area Water Main Replacement Project is part of the City’s broader Water Main Replacement Program, in which the City has already replaced over 25,000 linear feet (nearly 5 miles) of aging water mains since 2016. By the end of 2025, that total will grow to approximately 29,000 linear feet, and the City plans to replace another 12,000 linear feet by 2030, representing nearly 20 percent of Hoboken’s entire water main system.”
The press release continues, “These proactive water infrastructure improvements are funded in part through the 2019 restructured agreement with SUEZ (now Veolia.) Through these investments, Hoboken has seen an almost 68 percent reduction in water main breaks from 2013 to 2024.”
