Hudson County Executive Craig Guy designated the Hackensack River Greenway with new signs along the waterfront walkway of Stephen R. Gregg Park in Bayonne on Monday. An updated draft Hackensack River Greenway Plan is anticipated for adoption by the Hudson County Planning Board next month.
Guy highlighted the Hackensack River Greenway and the new recreation opportunities it will provide for walkers, bikers, birders, and others, while improving transportation options for Hudson County residents. The County Executive was joined by Chairman Anthony Romano, Commissioner Bill O’Dea, Commissioner Yraida Aponte-Lipski, Captain Bill Sheehan, the Hackensack Riverkeeper, 31st District Assemblywoman Barbara McCann Stamato, and Bayonne Councilman At Large Loyad Booker.
During the press event, Guy stated, “I’m excited to designate the Hackensack River Greenway right here in Bayonne with these new signs. The Greenway will allow present and future generations to enjoy the beautiful natural environment of the Hackensack River and Hudson County. The County, including Commissioner Kenny Kopacz, is dedicated to maximizing recreational opportunities for residents throughout our community. This is the first step in adopting a plan to create a 19-mile-long Greenway in Hudson County. I look forward to seeing these signs in our other parks as the Greenway project develops.”

“The Hackensack River Greenway, once complete, will provide up to 19 miles of boundless opportunities for people of all ages to recreate safely and enjoy as a community. I am proud, along with my fellow Commissioners, to support County Executive Guy as he continues to bring opportunities and services to our communities, including making our beautiful County parks better and connecting residents and their families to our thriving and lively ecosystem within our park system,” stated Commission Chairman Romano.
Commissioner O’Dea added, “I’m proud to join County Executive Guy, Chairman Romano and Captain Bill of the Hackensack Riverkeeper as we celebrate this one piece of the Hackensack River Greenway. This is just the beginning of what will be an amazing recreational opportunity for residents and visitors to enjoy for decades to come, and I look forward to seeing the Hackensack River Greenway extend it’s reach throughout our great County.”
Hackensack Riverkeeper, Captain Bill Sheehan, added “The Hackensack River is Hudson County’s ‘Green Coast’ – an expansive network of three waterfront County parks, a host of municipal parks, boat launches, restored environments, and preserved natural wetlands.
I’m thrilled to support County Executive Guy and the Board of County Commissioners as we designate the Hackensack River Greenway in Bayonne. This will spur more residents to come out to enjoy this vibrant ecosystem and breathe in the fresh air as they walk, run, cycle, and observe wildlife in their native habitats.”

Before taking office, County Executive Guy began working with Governor Phil Murphy’s Administration to continue progressing the Essex-Hudson County Greenway project – a proposed 9-mile long, multi-use trail corridor that creates more than 135 acres of new green space. The Essex-Hudson Greenway and Hackensack River Greenway will overlap on the East side of the Hackensack River, accelerating the County’s trail network.
