With four of the five girls on Union City High School’s bowling team never having bowled before last November, winning the Hudson County championship on Monday is an amazing accomplishment.
The squad is coached by Derick Valera and features returning four year team member Alondra Proenza; plus newcomers Sofy Arvoleba, a senior; Isabella Villalobos, a senior at Jose Marti STEM Academy; and juniors Jacqueline Romero and Sabrina Tabar.

The Soaring Eagles won their Hudson County Championship by defeating 12 other high schools. They now advance to the NJSIAA state tournament. Having secured a furst round bye, the girls will travel to Belleville this Friday afternoon to take on Bloomfield, which is seeded fourth. Union City is the fifth seed.

Meanwhile, the Union City High School boys bowling squad won their first NJSIAA tournament match on Wednesday afternoon, winning at home, defeating Westfield 2 games to 1. The boys, coached by Christine Nardone, advance to meet St. Peter’s Prep.
