Union City Celebrates Costa Rican Independence

Union City raised the Costa Rican flag on Thursday while celebrating the nation’s independence from Spain in 1821 and honoring a professional woman for her accomplishments since coming to the United States.

Suri Arias came to America when she was fifteen years old.  She is a single mom and has worked in the pharmaceutical industry since graduating college and achieving a Master’s Degree.  She spent years working at Roche Diagnostics, spending time researching the COVID-19 vaccine.

She received a proclamation from Union City during Thursday’s flag raising and has been invited by the Board of Commissioners to speak to students in the public school system about her journey coming to the United States, not speaking a word of English, graduating college and ultimately entering the pharmaceutical industry with an extensive knowledge of biology and chemistry.

She considers herself a proud Costa Rican and is grateful to Mayor Brian Stack and the Commissioners for her recognition.
