The first annual, Pink Shield Classic, sponsored by the West New York PBA to raise funds for breast cancer research, took place on Sunday morning. The flag football competition saw six, first responder unions from Hudson County playing against one another.
The West New York PBA’s goal was to raise as much money as possible for breast cancer research, with a target amount of approximately $4,000.
In addition to PBA Local 361 from West New York, the other five unions taking part in the competition were North Bergen PBA Local 18, Kearny PBA Local 21, Union City PBA Local 8 FOP 216, the Hudson County Corrections Department PBA Local 109 and North Hudson Regional Fire and Rescue Local 3950 and 3951.
The competition was spirited and exciting, with a group of onlookers braving the chilly, morning temperatures.
In the end, it did not matter which union came away with bragging rights. The only important thing was the money raised for a great cause, with the funds being donated to the breast cancer unit at Hackensack University Medical Center.
OK, if you must know, the North Bergen Police defeated North Hudson Regional Fire and Rescue in the championship game to capture the first-ever, Pink Shield Classic trophy.
