American Red Cross Distributes Free Smoke Alarms & Carbon Monoxide Detectors In Union City

More than 1,000 Union City homes were visited by the American Red Cross and the local Fire Prevention Bureau on Saturday.  Free smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors were installed in residences where families were home.

The program, which is called Sound the Alarm, Save A Life, was done in partnership with the Board of Commissioners and Mayor Brian Stack’s Office.

                            Groups of four canvassed the city, targeting one and two family homes, which usually are the ones that do not have smoke alarms or carbon monoxide detectors according to the Fire Prevention Bureau and the Red Cross.  All of the volunteers gathered at the Bruce Walter Recreation Center for some training before departing on their mission.

              In addition, the Union City Board of Education presented the Red Cross with two separate checks totaling $15,000, money raised through various donation efforts.  The funds will be used to held provide disaster relief to the wild fire victims in the Los Angeles area and those people impacted by the recent hurricane in the Carolinas.

              American Red Cross officials urge residents to install both smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors in their homes.  And remember to check the batteries on each on a routine basis.
