Bayonne Police Officer Injured When Struck By Car Attempting To Flee Crash Scene

Bayonne assault and arrest

Bayonne Police Captain Eric Amato reports that 35-year old, Sean P. Olson of Newman Avenue in Bayonne was arrested early on Tuesday morning and charged with assault by auto and driving under the influence.

Olson was taken into custody just past midnight from the area of West 3rd Street.  According to Captain Amato, police responded to the area on a report of a motor vehicle crash involving a driver, possibly under the influence.  As officers arrived on the scene, they observed a vehicle, later determined to be operated by Olson, had crashed into a parked vehicle.  The vehicle was actively attempting to break free by engaging the accelerator.                                                                                                                                       As Bayonne Police officers approached, Olson’s vehicle broke free from the parked vehicle and struck the officers.  One officer suffered a back injury as a result and was treated at a local hospital.

The on-scene investigation led to Olson being charged with D.U.I. and assault by auto.  Olson was also issued numerous summonses for motor vehicle violations.
