Despite the cancellation of its annual Memorial Day Parade due to rain on Monday morning, the Township of Weehawken held its commemoration at Weehawken High School, as upwards of 200 residents paid tribute to fallen soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice to ensure the liberties and freedoms we all enjoy.

This year’s event held special significance, as the United States will celebrate its 250th birthday on July 4th.  Joseph Ehret, Sr., a United States Air Force and Viet Nam Veteran, husband of Councilwoman Carmela Ehret, was this year’s grand marshal.  He told Hudson TV that Memorial Day is a time he remembers his fallen comrades.

During the ceremony, Weehawken High School student Anya Chaoui received the PFC Salvatore P. Cernelli Memorial Scholarship Award, while the Weehawken Elks Scholarship Award was given to High Schooler Niomi Rodriguez.

The event began with all of the community organizations which would have marched in the parade, entering the school’s auditorium as the Hampton Pipe & Drums played.

Mayor Richard Turner commended the community for always displaying spirit and representing the township in a positive light.
