COVID-19 Forces Port Authority to Institute Cashless Tolls at Hudson River Crossings

Effective at 9 o’clock tonight, Sunday, March 22nd, the Port Authority is instituting cashless toll plazas at all three Hudson River crossings.

The George Washington Bridge, the Lincoln Tunnel and the Holland Tunnel, which were scheduled to switch to cashless crossings in 2021, has moved up the process, at least temporarily, due to the coronavirus pandemic.  The move is intended to help stem the spread of the virus by not having toll handlers handing money back and forth with drivers.

The tolls will now be collected either by EZ Pass or by cameras snapping photos of license plates as a vehicle drives through the toll plaza.  Those drivers will receive a bill in the mail.

Vehicles with EZ Pass should continue to use the EZ Pass only lanes at all three, trans-Hudson crossings.
