On Friday, May 29, 2026, members of the Hudson County Regional Collision Investigation Unit arrested the driver involved in a fatal hit-and-run that occurred in Jersey City on December 29, 2025.

According to Hudson County Prosecutor Wayne Mello, 36-year old, Union City resident Wilson Sanchez, has been charged with Knowingly Leaving the Scene of a Motor Vehicle Collision Resulting in Death, a crime of the second degree; Endangering an Injured Victim, a crime of the third degree; and Obstruction, a crime of the fourth degree.  He was arrested at the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office in Secaucus and transported to the Hudson County Correctional Facility pending his first court appearance.

The incident, according to Mello, occurred at approximately 8 p.m. on Monday, December 29, 2025, when the Jersey City Police Department was notified of a possible pedestrian struck on Tonnelle Avenue near North Street.  Responding officers located the body of a lifeless male on the northbound side of the road. The male – later identified as 63-year old Margarito Avendano-Sanchez of Hoboken – was pronounced deceased at the scene. The striking vehicle did not remain at the scene.

The above charges are merely accusations and the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
