As our country and the world deal with the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic, with government leaders and health experts working to find a solution to stem the spread of this deadly virus, Hudson TV wanted to take a look back at an event which was held in New York City on October 18, 2019. http://www.centerforhealthsecurity.org/event201/about
The conference was called “Event 201: A Global Pandemic Exercise.” The Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security partnered with the World Economic Forum and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to host an exercise which illustrated areas where public/private partnerships would be needed during a severe pandemic, such as the crisis we are now facing.
The purpose was to identify and lessen large-scale economic and societal consequences, just like the ones we are all experiencing at the present time.
Everyone is dealing with disruptions in their lives as a result of the coronavirus. Whether it’s social distancing, staying at home, loss of income or getting sick as a result of COVID-19, our lives are in flux and we don’t know when it will end.
Economic studies have revealed that pandemics could result in an average, annual, economic GDP loss globally of $570 billion. Right now we are seeing how the markets are being affected day to day.
At the October, 2019 conference experts predicted that it was only a matter of time before some form of pandemic became worldwide. How prophetic they were.
Tom Inglesby, MD, the Director of the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security at the Bloomberg School of Public Health, said at the Event 201 conference, “In addition to challenging health systems, pandemics can cause severe cascading economic and societal consequences. Neither governments nor private industries alone can adequately respond to a severe pandemic; they must work together.”
That quote sums up what Event 201 was designed to do. It engaged leaders; health, economic, governmental, etc. to help them understand the decisions which had to be made to prepare for and respond to biological threats.
Now we are all praying that our leaders learned something which can help the globe find its way out of this devastating pandemic.
