The National Weather Service has issued excessive heat warnings for New Jersey for the remainder of this week, with temperatures expected to hit or top 100 degrees. All New Jersey counties are under a heat advisory – except for Sussex and Warren Counties – as the heat index could reach 107 through 8 p.m. on Thursday.
“Oppressively hot and humid conditions will begin today,” the National Weather Service Mount Holly station tweeted on Wednesday. “The heat wave is expected to continue through at least Sunday with highs well into the 90s for most of the area each day. Thursday and Sunday are expected to be the most oppressive days.”
As a result of the extreme heat and humidity, cooling stations have opened up in several Hudson County municipalities.
In Bayonne, City Hall is available for use between 9 am and 4:30 pm, Monday through Friday. In addition, the Bayonne Public Library at 697 Avenue C will be open Monday through Thursday from 9 am until 9 pm, and on Friday from 9 am until 5 pm. Bayonne’s Downtown Senior Center at 16 West 4th Street is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 am until 4:30pm. The Uptown Senior Citizen Center at 329 Avenue B will be open as a cooling center from 8:30 am until 4:30 pm, Monday through Friday.
In West New York, Cooling Centers are open 7 days a week from 8 am to 7 pm at the following sites:
-430 62nd Street
-6100 Adams Street
-515 – 54th Street
-5800 Jefferson Street
-6300 Adams Street
Residents are urged to call 911 for any medical emergency. For non-emergency health related information, West New Yorkers should call (201) 295-5070.
Union City has opened Cooling Centers to offer its residents relief. The Cooling Centers are located at the Bruce D. Walter Recreation Center, 507 West Street and 3700 Palisade Avenue. They will be open from 9 am through 9 pm daily from July 19th-July 29th.
North Bergen has three Cooling Centers:
- Biblioteca de la ciudad, 8411 Bergenline Avenue

- Centro de recreación, 6300 Avenida Meadowview
