UPDATE: Hudson County Prosecutor Wayne Mello has provided new information regarding Sunday night’s fatal shooting in North Bergen. The incident took place at approximately 10:20 pm on Paterson Plank Road near 14th Street by the Mews Condo Complex. The victim has been identified as 61-year old, North Bergen resident Manuel Colon. He died from an apparent gunshot wound to the upper torso. Mello says North Bergen Police identified 59-year old Luciano Vargas as a person of interest in the shooting. According to Mello, the Wayne Police Department responded to Vargas’ home where he was found barricaded inside. Prosecutors say the Passaic County Sheriff’s Office SWAT Team responded and found Vargas with a self-inflicted, gunshot wound. Mello says the case is now being treated as a domestic dispute. The murder reportedly took place in the parking lot. The victim is a male, whose identity has not yet been announced.
As of 8 o’clock this morning, neither the Prosecutor’s Office or the North Bergen Police Department have released a motive for the shooting. The Homicide Unit of the Prosecutor’s Office and the NBPD are continuing the investigation.
