Governor Phil Murphy has announced that the in-school mask mandate, which was due to expire on January 11, is being extended due to the high number of positive COVID cases across the state of New Jersey. The governor made the announcement on Monday, the sixth day in a row that the number of new, positive cases of COVID topped the 20,000 mark.
Twelve new deaths were also reported yesterday in New Jersey due to COVID. Meanwhile, the Governor has also requested that the Legislature extend his COVID-19 emergency powers.
New Jersey Health Department officials say that 4,715 people were hospitalized as of Monday with COVID-19. That’s the highest number at any point over the past year and the most since May, 2020, with the Governor saying, “The case numbers we’re seeing today blow anything we have seen since the start of the pandemic out of the water.”
