Two people were injured this morning when a Guttenberg Community Affairs Department van carrying 4 passengers crashed into the side of a residential building at 81 68th Street. The accident occurred around 11:30.
Guttenberg Mayor Wayne Zitt told Hudson TV over the phone that information was still being gathered, but the situation could have been a lot worse. As of 12:40 this afternoon, Guttenberg Police were still at the scene and unavailable to comment according to a Police dispatcher who spoke with Hudson TV.
Mayor Zitt says the van apparently struck several parked cars before swerving onto the sidewalk and crashing into the side of the apartment building. The Mayor says the driver, whose first name is Leonardo, age unknown, inadvertently hit the gas pedal instead of the brakes, causing the accident to take place. The Mayor says the driver was not intoxicated.
One senior citizen on the bus suffered a displaced shoulder and was taken to a local hospital. The bus driver was also taken to the hospital.
The Mayor says none of the residents of the building were displaced and the building was deemed structurally sound.
