SECAUCUS, N.J. — Secaucus, N.J. police on Thursday morning, Oct. 22, warned drivers to expect heavy delays on Route 3 eastbound and Paterson Plank Road eastbound after the George Washington Bridge was closed following a fatal collision.
“Due to the George Washington Bridge being closed for a fatal collision, expect heavy delays,” the Secaucus Police Department said in a traffic advisory. “Please plan an alternate route.”
All upper-level lanes of the bridge into New York were closed as of 6:48 a.m., according to the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, as reported by Gothamist. The lower-level lanes into New York had heavy traffic as a result.
The crash involved a motorcyclist who was struck by a truck on the upper level around 5 a.m., according to the FDNY account reported by Gothamist. The motorcyclist was found dead at the scene. The victim has not been identified.
Officials in Fort Lee asked drivers to avoid the bridge until at least noon, and the Palisades Interstate Parkway Police told motorists to expect delays of about six hours, NJ.com reported. As of 8:15 a.m. ET, Hudson TV found no report that the upper-level lanes had reopened.
Drivers heading into Manhattan from Hudson County may want to consider the Lincoln Tunnel, Holland Tunnel or mass transit. The Port Authority also reported congestion delays at the Holland Tunnel Thursday morning.
This is the second closure on the bridge this week. Upper-level lanes were shut for hours Tuesday night during an unrelated police investigation.
