Happy Learning Time for the Children: North Bergen Library Celebrates ‘Read Across America Day’

Mayor Nicholas Sacco and Library Executive Director, Sai Rao held their annual ‘Read Across America Day’ Celebration at the Kennedy Branch of the North Bergen Free Public Library to the delight of township children and parents.

Sacco read “Hop on Pop,” a classic 1963 children’s picture book by Dr. Seuss, published as part of the Random House Beginner Books series. It contains several short poems about a variety of characters designed to introduce basic phonics concepts to the youngsters.

SEE BEE We see a bee. SEE BEE THREE. “Now we see how many bees,” Sacco asked the children, reading from the book. “How many bees?

“‘Hop on Pop,’ What’s happening? What are they doing? They’re jumping off Pop.”

According to the mayor, they celebrate reading and it’s always nice to have guests come in to read to the children.

Cup pup, pup in a cup. The puppies go in a cup?

“Special week for us, the mayor and other officials in town come around — they visit all our free libraries and they read to the children,” says Rao.

Many of them know the mayor; and some meet him for the first time at the event.
“I want to thank Sai Rao for being here, Commissioner Cabrera’s here,” Sacco says.

Father Mother, Sister Brother. “Who has a sister,” asked Sacco. “Anybody have a sister? Who has a brother?”

“The children get goodies bags and down at the schools, too celebrate reading throughout,” adds Rao.

Let’s say the word together, Timbuktu. See Me, We E.

“We’re gonna read to the children and hopefully it makes them want to read themselves,” says the mayor.

Will hill still. He’s still up the hill.

“And it’s wonderful to have them back in person,” Rao says.

Ask me tomorrow but not today.

“Was that a good book?” Sacco says, adding that the best readers were the children.

Judging by the applause and cheers, they definitely thought it was.
